Doublefile Viburnum

Viburnum plicatum "Tomentosum" is a variety of the commonly known, Japanese Snowball Bush, and is a deciduous shrub grown for its layered foliage and showy flowers. Clusters of white, lacecap flowers are borne during spring on tiered branches that also host dark green leaves. The combination of flowers and foliage is very aesthetic. As autumn progresses the leaves develop colourful purple tones before falling. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2.5 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance with this variety is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site. It is a hardy plant that will tolerate dry periods, coastal conditions, frost, and cool climates. The Snowball Bush is commonly grown as a specimen, included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, included in cottage gardens, or planted around outdoor living areas.

Distinctive Features of Viburnum plicatum var tomentosum

Viburnum plicatum var tomentosum is admired for its unique, flattened lacecap-style blooms. Each branch is lined with creamy white flower clusters in late spring, creating a stunning "wedding cake" effect. After flowering, you'll enjoy vibrant red berries that gradually darken to black, attracting native birds and adding life to your garden. The deep green, textured leaves turn a beautiful reddish-purple in autumn, providing year-round appeal. It usually grows to around 2–3 metres tall and wide, forming an attractive, layered screen or specimen in any border.

Where to Plant Viburnum plicatum var tomentosum

This viburnum is versatile and well-suited to a range of garden settings. Choose a site in full sun or partial shade, with moist but well-drained soil. Whether you want to create a focal point, soften a fence line, or form a backdrop in a mixed shrubbery, viburnum plicatum var tomentosum fits the brief. It pairs beautifully with other structural shrubs such as Viburnum 'Emerald Lustre', Rhododendron Purple Splendour, or as a contrast to the fine foliage of Acacia 'Limelight'.

Planting and Care

Viburnum plicatum var tomentosum is easy to grow and relatively low maintenance. Plant in a position with some shelter from strong winds, especially in coastal areas. Water young plants regularly until they establish, then only during dry periods. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring and mulch well to retain moisture. Pruning is rarely necessary, other than to remove old or wayward branches – simply allow the plant’s natural form to shine.

If you love the look and resilience of these shrubs, explore other garden-worthy viburnums, such as Viburnum 'Emerald Beauty', classic Viburnum opulus Sterile (Snowball Bush), and fragrant Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn'.

Design Combinations and Companions

Viburnum plicatum var tomentosum can be the centrepiece of a classic white garden or anchor a backdrop for vibrant borders. Team with evergreens for winter structure, or underplant with companion shrubs like Pittosporum Emerald Green (Black Matipo) and colourful Nandina Gulf Stream. To extend the flowering season and attract pollinators, try adding Hebe speciosa (Veronica speciosa) or Viburnum davidii (female).

Why Choose Viburnum plicatum var tomentosum

This truly iconic viburnum deserves a place in every garden. Its combination of architectural form, spring flowers, vibrant autumn colour and bird-friendly berries creates year-round drama with very little effort. For garden structure, wildlife value, and pure style, viburnum plicatum var tomentosum is a top choice for New Zealand homes and landscapes.
