Popular Viburnum Plant Varieties

Within the viburnum plant group, there are many cultivars suited to different garden styles and purposes. Some of our most popular varieties include:

Viburnum burkwoodii (Burkwood Viburnum)

Noted for its spicy-scented, pink-flushed white blooms in spring, Viburnum burkwoodii (Burkwood Viburnum) is a beautiful choice for garden borders or specimen planting.

Viburnum odoratissimum (Sweet Viburnum)

For fast-growing, evergreen coverage, Viburnum odoratissimum (Sweet Viburnum) is an excellent hedge or screening plant. It grows rapidly and offers clusters of small white flowers with a delightful fragrance.

Viburnum davidii (female) and Viburnum davidii (male)

This compact, low-growing viburnum variety is ideal for groundcover or underplanting. Plant both Viburnum davidii (female) and Viburnum davidii (male) together to ensure a spectacular show of blue berries in autumn.

Viburnum 'Emerald Lustre'

For glossy, bright green leaves and dense habit, Viburnum 'Emerald Lustre' is perfect as a hardy hedge or background shrub.

Tips for Growing Viburnum in New Zealand

Viburnum plants are generally unfussy, but they thrive best in well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. Add compost when planting and mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Most viburnum varieties are drought-tolerant once established, making them suitable for low-maintenance gardens.

Regular pruning after flowering keeps your viburnum plant tidy and promotes fresh growth. Keep an eye out for pests like aphids, but generally, these plants are hardy and disease-resistant.

Add Lasting Beauty with Viburnum
