Why Choose Viburnum Anne Russell for Your Garden?

One of the standout features of Viburnum Anne Russell is its long flowering time. Starting in late winter, the shrub adorns itself with domed clusters of blush pink flower buds that open into pure white, sweetly scented blooms. This early flowering offers valuable nectar for pollinators when few other plants are in bloom and brings a welcome splash of colour as the garden wakes from its winter dormancy. Reaching about 1.5 metres in height and spread, it fits easily into cottage gardens, contemporary spaces, and foundation plantings. Its glossy, dark green leaves are semi-evergreen in mild New Zealand climates, ensuring it looks good year-round with minimal maintenance.

Planting and Care Tips

For the best performance, plant Viburnum Anne Russell in a spot with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Although it’s tolerant of a range of conditions, it will be happiest in soil enriched with compost and mulched to retain moisture. Regular watering is important in the first couple of years, but once established, it’s a remarkably hardy and drought-tolerant shrub. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth, but avoid hard cuts as this can impact next year’s flower display.

Perfect Pairings: Related Viburnum Varieties

If you love the scent and beauty of viburnums, there are several outstanding relatives to consider alongside Viburnum Anne Russell. For an evergreen option with a contrasting form, Viburnum davidii (female) is an excellent choice, prized for its glossy foliage and bright blue berries in autumn. Those who enjoy larger, dramatic blooms may be drawn to Viburnum opulus Notcutt's Varieity (Snowball Bush), a stunning deciduous selection. If you’re seeking more fragrance or wish to create a varied viburnum border, explore Viburnum burkwoodii (Burkwood Viburnum), another hybrid celebrated for its perfume, or the tough, evergreen Viburnum odoratissimum (Sweet Viburnum), ideal for screening and hedging needs. Viburnum Anvi is also worthy of consideration for its unique growth habit and flower colour.
