The Benefits of Vetiver Grass in New Zealand Gardens

Vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) is prized for its deep, fibrous roots that can reach up to 3 metres, making it one of the most effective plants for soil erosion control and bank stabilisation. The upright, dense foliage creates a beautiful vertical effect in gardens and landscaping designs while providing a tough, drought-tolerant ground cover. Vetiver is also widely used in ecological wastewater treatment systems and for filtering pollutants from stormwater runoff.

Aside from its practicality, vetiver brings subtle elegance to garden borders and naturalistic plantings. It thrives in a range of environments—from full sun to part shade, and from well-drained to heavier soils. Its clumping habit means it won’t spread invasively like some grasses, making vetiver ideal for gardeners seeking order as well as sustainability.

Easy Maintenance and Versatile Applications

Once established, vetiver grass is incredibly resilient. Maintenance is minimal, with little need for watering or fertilising in most NZ regions. Cut back dead foliage after winter and enjoy fresh new growth in spring. Vetiver fits beautifully alongside other robust landscape grasses, such as Lomandra Little Pal, Lomandra Platinum Beauty, and Lomandra Fine and Dandy, for striking foliage contrasts and textural diversity.

If you’re looking to enhance wetland margins and riparian zones, pairing vetiver with natives like Carex virgata offers outstanding ecological benefits and visual appeal. Vetiver also complements ornamental favourites such as Liriope 'Monroe White' for bold, contemporary planting schemes.
