Why Choose Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides)?

Vetiver grass forms dense, vertical clumps of lush, evergreen leaves and can reach up to 1.5 metres in height. Renowned for its deep, fibrous root system, vetiver stabilises the soil and prevents erosion even in the most challenging conditions. The roots can reach depths of 2–4 metres, locking soil in place on banks, cuttings, and stream edges. It’s an ideal choice for those wanting a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant grass that thrives under New Zealand climate extremes.

Vetiver is also celebrated for its natural resistance to pests and diseases, making it an eco-friendly solution for earthworks and sustainable land management.

Popular Uses for Vetiver Grass

Purchasing vetiver grass for sale unlocks a world of possibilities. Use vetiver as a living barrier to filter runoff, control weeds, or demarcate planting zones. Its dense growth pattern can provide privacy, windbreaks, or livestock shelter belts. In permaculture and regenerative agriculture, it supports terraced gardening, rain gardens, and waterway protection. Vetiver grass is also a great companion plant to other ornamental grasses like Carex lambertiana (Forest Sedge) and Chionochloa rubra, offering texture variety throughout your landscape.

Vetiver Grass Care and Growing Conditions

Vetiver grass is low fuss once established. Plant in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soils for best results. It tolerates heavy clays, sands, and compacted soils, thriving in both wet and dry areas. Water young plants regularly until robust, then vetiver’s drought tolerance shines. Trim back each spring to promote fresh, tidy growth.

Pair vetiver with other robust, low-maintenance grasses like Lomandra Katrinus Deluxe and Carex comans Red for bold foliage combinations, or explore the architectural qualities of Lepidosperma laterale (Variable Swordsedge) for moist border plantings.
