What Is a Variegated Crassula?

A variegated crassula refers to any species within the Crassula genus that displays variegated foliage—leaves with more than one colour, usually featuring stripes, speckles, or borders of white, yellow, or pink. The most well-known variegated crassula is Crassula ovata tricolor (Crassula Plant), an eye-catching jade plant with cream and pink-edged leaves. Other favourites include Crassula pellucida variegata, famous for its trailing habit and colourful leaves, and Crassula Buddhas Temple (Buddha's Temple Plant), which features geometric stacks with hints of creamy variegation.

How to Grow and Care for Variegated Crassula

Growing variegated crassula is simple—these resilient succulents adapt well to pots, rockeries, and garden beds. Plant them in free-draining cactus or succulent mix and locate them where they’ll get plenty of bright, indirect light. Morning sun and afternoon shade is best, as direct sun can sometimes scorch the delicate variegated zones. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, and reduce moisture during the cooler months to avoid root rot.

Variegated crassulas are quite tolerant but will thrive with a monthly dose of diluted liquid fertilizer in spring and summer. Pruning back leggy growth will encourage more bushy, attractive plants, and you can propagate new plants easily from leaf or stem cuttings.

Where to Plant Your Variegated Crassula

Variegated crassula plants are versatile and can be featured in patio containers, window sills, or mixed succulent beds. They look exceptional teamed with pebbles, driftwood, and other succulents, adding both structure and softness to xeriscape designs. Since many are frost-tolerant, they can be grown outdoors year-round in most parts of New Zealand, or overwintered inside in cooler regions.
