What Are Hebe Plants?

Hebe is a genus of evergreen shrubs native to New Zealand and a staple in Kiwi gardens. They are valued for their year-round structure, lush leaves, and spikes of purple, pink, blue, or white blooms, often attracting bees and butterflies. Hebes are generally hardy, adaptable to various soil types, and thrive with minimal care, making them perfect for both novice and seasoned gardeners.

Popular Types of Hebe Plant for New Zealand Gardens

With hundreds of varieties available, the types of hebe plant offer immense diversity. Here are some top picks and how they might fit into your garden:

Hebe Black Satin

If you love dark, glossy foliage, Hebe Black Satin is an outstanding choice. This type of hebe plant features deep purple-black leaves and a neat, compact form. It works beautifully as a border plant or in contemporary garden designs, providing year-round interest and texture.

Hebe Catherine

For delicate structure and subtle colour, Hebe Catherine has slender, variegated foliage with an attractive blend of green and cream. Its lilac flowers add gentle splashes of colour from spring through summer. Perfect for softening pathways or enhancing mixed shrub plantings.

Hebe 'Wiri Mist'

Hebe 'Wiri Mist' is prized for its cloud-like appearance and prolific white flowers. This compact, mounding type of hebe plant is ideal for ground cover or edging, lending a light, airy quality to garden beds or coastal plantings.

Hebe Marie Antoinette

Vibrant pinkish-purple flower clusters make Hebe Marie Antoinette stand out among the types of hebe plant. Its rounded, robust shape and glossy leaves create a striking feature shrub or informal hedge, particularly when mass-planted.

Hebe Waireka

Hebe Waireka is known for its rich green foliage and elegant sprays of pale lilac to white flowers. This variety suits mixed native borders and looks spectacular when paired with flaxes or grasses for year-round visual interest.

Care Tips for All Types of Hebe Plant

Most hebe varieties are easy to grow. They prefer well-drained soil and a sunny or lightly shaded spot, though they tolerate wind and salt spray, making them fantastic for coastal gardens. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy shape and encourage new growth. Regular mulching and the occasional deep watering in extended dry periods will help keep your hebes healthy and prolific.

Finding the Best Types of Hebe for Your Garden

Choosing among the many types of hebe plant means considering your site, soil, and style preferences. Mix varieties like Hebe Black Satin for contrast, Hebe 'Wiri Mist' for ground cover, and Hebe Marie Antoinette for bold colour.
