Popular Types of Evergreen Trees for Landscaping

The list of types of evergreen trees for landscaping in New Zealand is wonderfully diverse. From stately specimen trees to screening varieties and statement palms, there’s an evergreen suited for every location and design style.

Fraxinus griffithii

An excellent choice for Kiwi gardens, Fraxinus griffithii (Evergreen Ash) delivers attractive glossy foliage and a graceful, rounded canopy. It performs well as a small street or shade tree and is ideal for those wanting shelter and consistency in their landscape.

Callistemon viminalis

Renowned for its bright red bottlebrush flowers and narrow, arching leaves, Callistemon viminalis is a robust evergreen that brings colour and attracts native birds. This tree thrives in coastal and urban gardens, perfect for adding a touch of drama to hedges or as a striking feature.

Prunus laurocerasus

If privacy is your aim, Prunus laurocerasus (Cherry Laurel) is a classic screening evergreen. Its large, glossy leaves form a dense barrier, making it an excellent hedge or shelterbelt. It tolerates a range of soils and is a great solution for maintaining year-round seclusion.

Cordyline albertii

Looking for a bold, architectural effect? Cordyline albertii offers dramatic, sword-shaped foliage with splashes of colour. This evergreen palm is perfect as a container specimen or planted en masse for tropical impact and evergreen structure.

Phyllocladus trichomanoides (Celery Pine)

For a distinctly New Zealand touch, Phyllocladus trichomanoides (Celery Pine) is a lesser-known but beautiful native. Its soft, celery-like ‘leaves’ and elegant shape make it suitable for woodland gardens or as a refined specimen tree.

Designing with Evergreen Trees

When selecting types of evergreen trees for landscaping, consider aspects like mature size, growth rate, and placement. Use taller varieties as windbreaks or privacy screens, while compact evergreens fit well in small gardens or pots. Evergreens can also be mixed with deciduous trees and flowering shrubs for year-round appeal.
