New Zealand Kauri, Kauri Pine, Southern Kauri

Agathis australis, commonly known as the Kauri tree, is a revered New Zealand native conifer renowned for its immense size and longevity. Reaching heights of up to 50 metres with a trunk girth exceeding 16 metres, Kauri trees can live for over 2,000 years, making them one of the world's largest and longest-living tree species. Young Kauri trees exhibit a narrow, upright growth habit, with lime-green leaves that mature to a bronze hue. As they age, the crown broadens, creating a stately presence in the landscape. Kauri trees thrive in full sun to partial shade and prefer well-drained, fertile soils. While they can tolerate heavy soils and moderate frost once established, young trees require protection from frost and wind during their initial growth phase. Due to their impressive stature and cultural significance, Kauri trees are ideal as specimen trees in large gardens, parks, and native revegetation projects.

What is the Tree Kauri (Agathis australis)?

Tree kauri is a coniferous evergreen capable of reaching over 50 metres in height and forming an impressively wide trunk with ages exceeding 2,000 years in optimal forest conditions. The species is admired for its stately presence, glossy dark-green foliage, and distinctive flaking bark which helps protect it from pests and diseases. Kauri trees produce both male and female cones, and while slow-growing, they eventually develop broad, domed canopies that offer shelter and shade to understory plants and wildlife.

How to Grow Tree Kauri

Growing tree kauri in your garden is an investment in the landscape for generations to come. This species prefers well-drained, mildly acidic soils and a spot with full sun or light shade. Kauri should be planted well away from buildings and driveways, as their mature spread can be significant. Young saplings benefit from regular watering and mulching during the first few summers. Once established, tree kauri is tolerant of dry periods and wind, making it relatively low-maintenance for such a large specimen tree.

Companion and Related Species

If you’re interested in diversifying your garden with similar or complementary species, consider some of the tree kauri’s close relatives and other hardy trees. The Agathis robusta, or Queensland Kauri, is native to Australia and offers a lush, subtropical look suitable for larger properties. The Agathis corbassonii (Red Kauri) from New Caledonia, and Agathis macrophylla (Pacific Kauri) from Fiji and Vanuatu, both bring similar grandeur but with unique foliage and growth forms. For variation in texture and leaf shape, Nestegis montana (Narrow-Leaved Maire) is an excellent native companion.

Best Uses for Tree Kauri in Landscaping

Tree kauri is best suited for use as a striking specimen tree in parks, large gardens, schools, and public spaces. Its impressive canopy provides excellent habitat for native birds and acts as a microclimate for shade-loving plantings below. Pair with Agonis flexuosa (Willow Myrtle) for contrasting leaf shape or place it near flowering trees like Lagerstroemia subcostata or Prunus Tai Haku to extend seasonal interest. For formal avenues or shaded walks, Robinia pseudoacacia Umbraculifera can also be planted nearby.

Conservation and Legacy

Planting a tree kauri is a lasting legacy for future generations. As one of New Zealand’s ecological giants, the kauri embodies our native heritage and offers beauty and shade for centuries. Consider incorporating a kauri into your planting plan to help restore native forests and celebrate our unique flora.
