What Is the Tree Fuchsia Plant?

The tree fuchsia plant commonly refers to Fuchsia excorticata (Tree Fuchsia), New Zealand’s tallest native fuchsia and one of the country’s most unique native trees. Unlike its shrubby relatives, the tree fuchsia can reach heights of 10 to 12 metres, offering a beautiful canopy and distinctive, shredding bark. In spring and summer, the tree bursts into colour with clusters of purple and green flowers, followed by dark, edible berries that are loved by native birds as well as gardeners.

Growing and Caring for Tree Fuchsia

Planting a tree fuchsia plant is both simple and rewarding. Choose a site with dappled sunlight or partial shade, as these trees naturally thrive in forest margins and along streams. Well-drained, moist soil is ideal, and regular mulching helps retain ground moisture and protect shallow roots. While the tree fuchsia is tolerant of cooler climates and light frosts, younger plants may benefit from shelter during their first winter. Pruning is rarely necessary but can improve form and flowering if needed.

Benefits and Uses in the Garden

One of the greatest advantages of the tree fuchsia plant is its ability to attract native tūī, bellbirds, and silvereyes, thanks to its nectar-rich flowers and berries. It makes a wonderful choice for wildlife gardens or as a feature tree in a native planting scheme. The edible berries, sometimes called kōnini, can also be used in jams or desserts. With its elegant arching branches and deciduous habit, the tree fuchsia plant adds striking seasonal interest to any garden.

If you’re interested in other fuchsia varieties, explore Fuchsia arborescens for a shrubby relative with showy pink blossoms, the groundcover Fuchsia procumbens (Creeping Fuchsia), or ornamental hybrids such as Fuchsia 'Brookwood Belle' and Fuchsia 'La Campanella'.
