Austroderia fulvida, Arundo fulvida, Toe Toe Toe Toe, Toe Toe

Cortaderia fulvida, commonly known as Toetoe, is a large and vigorous NZ native grass. It bears long and narrow, mid-green leaves which are held with a gentle arch. Stems rise above the foliage during summer and autumn to bear large and feathery, flower plumes as it grows to 1.5 m tall and 2 m wide. Cortaderia fulvida is commonly used for stabilising soils, riparian plantings, and revegetation projects but also suits being planted for shelter, screening, or as a habitat for wildlife.

Why Choose Cortaderia fulvida?

Cortaderia fulvida, often called New Zealand toetoe, stands out for its fine-textured foliage and fluffy seed heads that glow in the sunlight from late spring into summer. Unlike the invasive pampas grass, this native toi toi is environmentally friendly and ideal for ecological plantings. It works exceptionally well as a statement specimen, in mass plantings for shelter or privacy, or along ponds and wetlands where its roots help stabilise soil and prevent erosion. Its low-maintenance nature means it will thrive in poor, sandy, or dry soils with minimal care—simply cut back old foliage in early spring to refresh its look.

Landscaping With Toi Toi

Toi toi’s graceful plumes and arching leaves bring drama and movement to any landscape. Plant Cortaderia fulvida as a living screen, along fences, or as an architectural anchor in mixed borders. For a natural, coastal-inspired look, combine it with other ornamental grasses such as Cortaderia splendens (Toetoe) or blue-toned varieties like Festuca Shades of Blue (Festuca Blue). These combinations create dynamic plantings with year-round texture, colour, and habitat value.

Companion Plants for Toi Toi

Pairing Cortaderia fulvida with other grasses and groundcovers enhances seasonal interest and supports biodiversity. Try contrasting its golden plumes with the glossy, strappy leaves and purple flower spikes of Liriope muscari or the silvery variegation of Liriope 'Silver Dragon'. For added spring and summer blooms, add Sisyrinchium 'Snow Bells', whose white star-shaped flowers provide delightful contrast. In wetter areas, Eleocharis acuta (Spike Rush) makes an excellent partner, contributing vertical accents and thriving in similar conditions.

Growing and Caring for Toi Toi

Once established, Cortaderia fulvida is exceptionally hardy and resilient. It tolerates wind, salt spray, and drought, making it perfect for coastal gardens or exposed sites. Plant in full sun for best growth and plume production. A yearly tidy-up keeps plants looking their best and prevents self-seeding. Whether you are landscaping a modern garden, restoring a riparian margin, or seeking a tough yet beautiful feature grass, toi toi plants for sale from our collection will deliver lasting value and visual appeal.
