Cortaderia fulvida, commonly known as Toetoe, is a large and vigorous NZ native grass. It bears long and narrow, mid-green leaves which are held with a gentle arch. Stems rise above the foliage during summer and autumn to bear large and feathery, flower plumes as it grows to 1.5 m tall and 2 m wide. Cortaderia fulvida is commonly used for stabilising soils, riparian plantings, and revegetation projects but also suits being planted for shelter, screening, or as a habitat for wildlife.

Why Choose Cortaderia fulvida?

Cortaderia fulvida is a hardy, large tussock grass renowned for its resilience and versatility. Drought-tolerant and salt-wind hardy, it's superb for coastal gardens, lifestyle blocks, and restoration projects. The iconic flower plumes appear from late summer into autumn, creating dramatic visual interest and providing valuable habitat for native wildlife. Toi toi thrives in full sun, tolerates poor soils, and once established, needs minimal care.

If you love the unique look of New Zealand grasses, you may also be interested in Cortaderia splendens (Toetoe), which offers similar feathery plumes, or rugged coastal options like Carex petriei. Both pair beautifully with toi toi for a naturalistic planting scheme.

Planting and Care Tips

For best results, plant your toi toi in a sunny or lightly shaded spot with free-draining soil. Space plants according to their mature size (up to 2m high and 1.5m wide) to allow the grasses to arch gracefully. Water young plants regularly for their first season, but Cortaderia fulvida is highly tolerant once established. Trim back spent flower stems in autumn or winter to encourage healthy new growth.

If you’re incorporating other grasses or coastal species, consider combining your toi toi with Juncus caespiticius (Grass Leaved Rush), Lomandra Green Allure, or Lomandra Blue Ridge for texture and year-round interest. For a pop of colour at the base, underplant with Armeria 'Armazing Little Ruby' (Thrift).
