Cortaderia fulvida, commonly known as Toetoe, is a large and vigorous NZ native grass. It bears long and narrow, mid-green leaves which are held with a gentle arch. Stems rise above the foliage during summer and autumn to bear large and feathery, flower plumes as it grows to 1.5 m tall and 2 m wide. Cortaderia fulvida is commonly used for stabilising soils, riparian plantings, and revegetation projects but also suits being planted for shelter, screening, or as a habitat for wildlife.

Why Choose Cortaderia fulvida?

Cortaderia fulvida is an ideal choice for coastal, wetland, and low-maintenance gardens. It thrives in a wide range of soils, from damp to well-drained, and handles wind and sun with ease. Its vigorous clumps reach up to 2-3 metres, making a striking backdrop or boundary screen. Native toetoe draws in native birds, adds privacy, and controls erosion — a valuable asset for both lifestyle blocks and urban homes wanting that unmistakable “NZ look”.

Growing and Caring for Toetoe

Planting our toetoe plant for sale is easy and rewarding. Toetoe prefers full sun but tolerates some shade, and once established is drought-resistant. Simply dig in some compost at planting and give young plants regular watering for their first season. Over time, minimal maintenance is needed apart from removing faded flower heads if desired. Because it’s a New Zealand native, toetoe requires less fertiliser and is less prone to pests and diseases than many exotic grasses.

After a few seasons, your Cortaderia fulvida will reward you with clusters of tall, feathery plumes dancing above the foliage from late spring through summer. These plumes are not only visually stunning but also supply nesting material and shelter for native insects and birds.

Design Ideas With Native Grasses

Toetoe looks fantastic mass-planted in drifts or as a feature by a pond, stream, or driveway. For the ultimate native grass garden, combine toetoe with other New Zealand species such as Luzula rufa for contrasting texture and colour.

If you’re looking for more sculptural options, consider the upright elegance of Cortaderia splendens (Toetoe). Want a finer, fountainsque grass for mixed plantings? Try Pennisetum setaceum (Fountain Grass). For water gardens or damp soils, complement toetoe with Schoenoplectus pungens (Bulrush Grass) or the uniquely tufted Isolepis cernua (Fiber-Optic Grass). For groundcover in sunny or coastal sites, Armeria 'Ballerina Red' (Thrift) adds bright flowers and evergreen foliage.
