thuja smaragd hedge

Thuja 'Smaragd', also known as Green Cedar or Green Arborvitae, is a favourite choice for gardeners and landscapers throughout New Zealand seeking to create beautiful, easy-care evergreen boundaries. Renowned for its striking, naturally conical form and vivid emerald-green foliage, the thuja smaragd hedge brings a refined structure and year-round privacy to almost any garden. It thrives in a range of conditions, is frost hardy, and is more tolerant of varied soils than many other conifers—making it an excellent solution for a reliable living screen or windbreak.

Green Cedar, Emerald Cedar, Green Arborvitae

Thuja 'Smaragd', commonly known as the Green or Emerald Cedar, grows with a narrow, dense, and columnar habit. The foliage is rich green, sometimes tinged bronze in winter, and produced with a somewhat layered effect to give the plant an interesting texture. It typically grows to 7 m in height and 2.5 m in width in full sun. Thuja 'Smaragd' is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, grown for shelter or screening, used for hedging, or planted to line an entranceway or avenue. It is excellent for providing an architectural element and suits being planted against a large, bland wall.

Why Choose Thuja Smaragd Hedge?

A thuja smaragd hedge offers unparalleled softness and vibrancy compared to traditional fencing. This slow to medium-growing conifer develops dense, vertical coverage, making it ideal for narrow spaces where upkeep time is a consideration. Unlike Leyland cypress or other fast-growing hedges, Thuja 'Smaragd' remains compact, typically reaching around 3 to 4 metres in height, and rarely needs heavy pruning. Light annual trimming will maintain a perfect hedge shape, while its non-shedding foliage means less mess underfoot.

Gardeners also love the thuja smaragd hedge for its disease resistance and resilience in exposed conditions. Its narrow footprint and lush appearance enhance both modern and classic garden designs, whether planted singly or in a formal row. With very little effort, your outdoor spaces enjoy lasting structure, privacy, and shelter.

Planting and Care Tips

To create a dense, healthy thuja smaragd hedge, plant at spacing intervals of 60–90cm, depending on how quickly you desire full coverage. Choose a location with well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. Water well after planting, then continue to water regularly during the first growing season, especially through dry spells. Mulching around the root zone helps maintain moisture and suppress weeds. Feed your hedge each spring with a slow-release fertiliser tailored for conifers, and trim lightly as needed to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth.

For gardeners with smaller spaces or those wanting distinct architectural interest, Thuja 'Smaragd' also makes an excellent specimen plant for containers or feature points in mixed borders.
