Green Cedar, Emerald Cedar, Green Arborvitae

Thuja 'Smaragd', commonly known as the Green or Emerald Cedar, grows with a narrow, dense, and columnar habit. The foliage is rich green, sometimes tinged bronze in winter, and produced with a somewhat layered effect to give the plant an interesting texture. It typically grows to 7 m in height and 2.5 m in width in full sun. Thuja 'Smaragd' is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, grown for shelter or screening, used for hedging, or planted to line an entranceway or avenue. It is excellent for providing an architectural element and suits being planted against a large, bland wall.

Why Choose a Thuja occidentalis Smaragd Hedge?

Renowned for its columnar shape and vibrant emerald colour, Thuja occidentalis ‘Smaragd’ maintains its tidy appearance with minimal effort. Unlike other conifers, it requires only light trimming to keep its classic silhouette, making it a favourite for both novice and experienced gardeners. With a mature height of around 3 to 4 metres (and only about 1 metre wide), it’s perfectly sized for hedging along driveways, boundaries, or around patios. Its dense growth also offers excellent noise reduction and wind protection, increasing the comfort and tranquillity of your outdoor spaces.

Planting and Care Tips

A thuja occidentalis smaragd hedge thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to a variety of well-drained soils. For the healthiest hedge, keep plants spaced approximately 60 to 80cm apart—close enough to ensure a dense screen without overcrowding. Regular watering during the first couple of seasons helps establish strong roots; after that, these tough conifers can handle dryer periods quite well. A light trim each autumn will keep your hedge looking neat, while an annual application of slow-release fertiliser promotes vigorous, rich green growth.

Thuja Smaragd Compared to Other Conifers

Thuja Smaragd is prized for its compact, formal growth habit, but it’s just one of a superb range of conifers available for New Zealand gardens. For taller, faster-growing privacy screens, Thuja ‘Green Giant’ is a popular alternative with lush, feathery foliage. If you favour golden tones, Thuja occidentalis ‘Rheingold’ or Thuja plicata Old Gold (Thuja Old Gold) each bring beautiful colour and texture to your landscape. For slightly narrower spaces, Thuja occidentalis Holmstrup or the similarly columnar Thuja occidentalis 'Pyramidalis' offer elegant alternatives.

Complementary Conifers for Your Garden

Combining your thuja occidentalis smaragd hedge with companion conifers can provide year-round interest and contrasting shapes. Pair with the stately Cedrus libani (Cedar Of Lebanon) for architectural presence, or add textural diversity with Picea orientalis. For a softer look, the feathery foliage of Cryptomeria japonica Jindai makes a fantastic contrast to the precise form of ‘Smaragd’.
