Green Cedar, Emerald Cedar, Green Arborvitae

Thuja 'Smaragd', commonly known as the Green or Emerald Cedar, grows with a narrow, dense, and columnar habit. The foliage is rich green, sometimes tinged bronze in winter, and produced with a somewhat layered effect to give the plant an interesting texture. It typically grows to 7 m in height and 2.5 m in width in full sun. Thuja 'Smaragd' is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, grown for shelter or screening, used for hedging, or planted to line an entranceway or avenue. It is excellent for providing an architectural element and suits being planted against a large, bland wall.

Why Choose Thuja o Smaragd?

The key attraction of Thuja o Smaragd is its consistently vibrant green foliage, which holds its colour throughout all seasons. Its tidy, upright habit means it is easily shaped into formal hedges or used as an eye-catching specimen tree. Gardeners appreciate its modest growth rate, reaching around 3–4 metres in height over 10 years, which ensures your hedge remains manageable without constant pruning. Thuja o Smaragd is tolerant of a range of soil types and adapts well to our changeable weather, making it a reliable option for Kiwi gardens.

Planting, Care, and Uses

Plant Thuja o Smaragd in a sunny to lightly shaded position with well-draining soil for best results. Space plants about 80cm to 1 metre apart for a dense, lush hedge. Water deeply during dry spells and apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. While Thuja o Smaragd needs minimal pruning, an annual light trim in late winter or early spring helps maintain its neat shape.

Common uses for Thuja o Smaragd include:

Thuja o Smaragd creates an excellent dense screen without becoming invasive, making it a popular alternative to faster but unrulier hedging varieties.

Explore Other Stunning Conifers

If you’re considering a range of conifers for your landscape, we offer several complementary options. For a similar upright form in a slightly different shade, consider Thuja occidentalis 'Pyramidalis'. If you require a larger, faster-growing option, Thuja 'Green Giant' is a classic choice for extensive shelterbelt planting.

For a golden accent in your conifer collection, Thuja occidentalis 'Rheingold' and Thuja plicata Old Gold (Thuja Old Gold) add glowing highlights, while Juniperus All Gold offers a striking contrast. If you love the look and climate adaptability of conifers, Thuja plicata provides a larger leafy backdrop, and exotics like Araucaria heterophylla (Norfolk Pine) add architectural interest to coastal gardens.

Visit our nursery to find healthy, locally grown Thuja o Smaragd and discover how the versatility and beauty of conifers like Abies koreana Alpine Star, Cupressus Gracilis (Italian Spruce), and Abies koreana Silberlocke can transform your outdoor space.
