Why Choose Thuja Gold for Your Garden?

Thuja gold is known for its attractive, feathery foliage that transitions from fresh golden-yellow in spring to warm amber hues in winter. This dazzling display makes it an ideal choice for lively garden borders, formal hedges, or as a light-enhancing backdrop for other plantings. Thuja gold maintains a compact, bushy habit, meaning it requires little pruning to retain its neat shape—perfect for busy gardeners or those new to conifers.

For a classic variety, Thuja plicata Old Gold (Thuja Old Gold) stands out. This selection combines golden tones with robust growth, making it one of the top picks for Kiwi landscapes that crave all-season colour.

Popular Thuja Gold Varieties

Several thuja gold cultivars offer a range of growth habits and foliage effects. Thuja plicata Old Gold (Thuja Old Gold) is highly popular for hedging, thanks to its dense growth and rich colour. Another standout is Thuja occidentalis 'Rheingold', admired for its softer, more delicate form and its foliage that takes on vibrant orange-gold tones with cooler weather.

These varieties are not only visually appealing but also low-maintenance, requiring little more than well-drained soil and regular watering through their establishment period.

Design Ideas with Thuja Gold

Incorporate thuja gold as a focal plant, or mix it with other golden-hued selections for a dazzling display. Pairing thuja gold with contrasting foliage brings out its luminous qualities. Consider planting alongside options like Rhododendron Vireya 'Haloed Gold', Strelitzia Mandelas Gold (Yellow Crane Flower), or the elegant Acer 'Shidava Gold' for a layered garden rich in texture and seasonal interest.

Care Tips for Thuja Gold

Thuja gold is well-suited for New Zealand’s regions, from coastal outskirts to inland gardens. Ensure good drainage and plant in a site where it will receive plenty of sunlight for the brightest colour. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first couple of years after planting. Minimal pruning is required, but you can trim lightly after the flush of new growth in summer to maintain a tidy appearance.

By incorporating thuja gold into your landscape, you’re choosing a timeless, low-fuss plant that brings elegance and structure all year round.
