Green Cedar, Emerald Cedar, Green Arborvitae

Thuja 'Smaragd', commonly known as the Green or Emerald Cedar, grows with a narrow, dense, and columnar habit. The foliage is rich green, sometimes tinged bronze in winter, and produced with a somewhat layered effect to give the plant an interesting texture. It typically grows to 7 m in height and 2.5 m in width in full sun. Thuja 'Smaragd' is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, grown for shelter or screening, used for hedging, or planted to line an entranceway or avenue. It is excellent for providing an architectural element and suits being planted against a large, bland wall.

Why Choose Thuja Emerald Green for Your Garden?

Thuja emerald green is celebrated for several reasons. Its tidy, columnar habit means it fits perfectly into smaller spaces or formal plantings where other evergreens might become unruly. Growing up to 3–4 metres tall and only about 1 metre wide, it creates a dense, elegant hedge without the need for constant pruning. The soft, feathery foliage remains a rich, emerald green even in winter, unlike many conifers that can bronze in the cold.

This plant is also remarkably hardy. Thuja emerald green withstands New Zealand’s variable weather, flourishes in full sun to partial shade, and copes well with a range of soils, provided they’re well-drained. Its drought tolerance, once established, makes it a smart, sustainable choice for gardens aiming to conserve water.

Where and How to Plant Thuja Emerald Green

Finding the right spot for your Thuja emerald green is easy. It's superb for creating living fences along property lines, as a privacy screen near patios or pools, or even planted in decorative containers for formal entrances. Position the plants about 60–90 centimetres apart for a dense hedge, or further apart if you’d like to showcase each as an individual specimen.

To establish strong growth, make sure the planting hole is twice the width of the root ball, and enrich the soil with compost or organic matter. Water regularly for the first year and apply an annual slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Beyond that, this Thuja is about as low-maintenance as they come—just trim in late summer to shape or to tidy up any errant growth.

Thuja Emerald Green Compared to Other Conifers

If you’re weighing your options, Thuja emerald green stands out for its neat habit and reliable colour. For gardens seeking alternative shapes or hues, consider Thuja occidentalis 'Pyramidalis' for a similarly narrow profile or Thuja plicata for a more robust, traditional look. Colour can be added with Thuja occidentalis 'Rheingold', which offers golden, soft foliage, or Thuja orientalis Aurea Nana, valued for its compact stature and golden tones. For those seeking rapid growth, Thuja 'Green Giant' is an outstanding alternative for larger spaces.

Mix and Match with Other Conifers

Thuja emerald green is highly versatile and pairs beautifully with a range of conifers to create year-round interest. Team it with Cupressus Gracilis (Italian Spruce) for classic structure, Picea glauca Conica for soft, blue-green accents, or Juniperus 'Mint Julep' for texture and contrast. Unleash your creativity by combining these for a dynamic, enduring display.

Embrace the qualities of Thuja emerald green and enjoy a lush, low-maintenance garden that remains vibrant through every season.
