Features and Appearance

Pittosporum eugenioides stands out with its vibrant, wavy-margined leaves that emit a delicate lemon fragrance when crushed. Mature Tarata lemonwood trees can reach up to 10 metres tall, making them ideal for both screening and taller hedges. In spring, clusters of small yellow-cream flowers appear, followed by decorative black seed capsules that attract native birds. With its upright, pyramidal form and rapid growth rate, Tarata adapts well to trimming, making it suitable for formal or informal hedges.

Growing Conditions and Care

Tarata lemonwood pittosporum eugenioides is remarkably hardy and adaptable. It grows well in full sun to part shade and tolerates a range of soils, including clay, loam, and sandy types—provided drainage is reasonable. While Tarata is drought-resistant once established, younger plants will benefit from regular watering in their first season. An annual feed with a general-purpose slow-release fertiliser and an occasional prune will encourage a dense, healthy canopy.

Like its close relatives Pittosporum tenuifolium and Pittosporum ‘Wrinkled Blue’, Tarata demonstrates excellent wind tolerance and can be used as a shelterbelt species in exposed rural areas. For a more compact, low-maintenance alternative, consider Pittosporum ‘Midget’ (Dwarf Pittosporum).

Landscaping Uses

Tarata lemonwood pittosporum eugenioides is renowned for its versatility in New Zealand gardens and landscapes. Use it as a tall hedge or privacy screen, or let it develop into a shapely specimen tree. It pairs well with other native trees and shrubs for a striking, low-maintenance native planting, and works beautifully in combination with contrasting foliage choices like Cupressus Golden Pyramid or the silvery leaves of Leptospermum laevigatum.

For layered planting, combine Tarata lemonwood with compact shrubs like Pittosporum ‘Limelight’ (Kohuhu) or Pittosporum ‘Mountain Green’. These selections provide year-round structure and colour in home gardens or larger landscapes. Tarata also complements feature trees such as Malus Echtermeyer, Elaeocarpus hookerianus, and graceful Agonis flexuosa (Willow Myrtle).

Why Grow Tarata Lemonwood Pittosporum Eugenioides?
