Lime Tahitian

5 from 3 customers

The 'Tahitian' Lime is a popular and quick-growing shrub that bears masses of medium-sized fruit that are juicy, strongly scented, and have that typical lime flavour. They begin green in summer and ripen to pale yellow in winter. This heavy-cropping, evergreen typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, but can be trimmed as necessary. 'Tahitian' Limes are commonly included in a mixed planting or maintained either in a container or in a courtyard garden.

Why Grow a Tahitian Lime Tree in NZ?

Tahitian lime trees (Citrus latifolia) flourish in New Zealand’s temperate climate, making them a reliable choice for both northern and southern regions. Unlike some other citrus, they don’t need another tree for pollination and produce consistently throughout the warmer months. Their smooth, nearly thornless branches make harvesting a breeze, and the glossy leaves add year-round visual interest to your garden.

If you enjoy the tangy, aromatic limes you see at the supermarket, you’ll love how much fresher your homegrown fruit tastes. Use them for juicing, slicing over seafood, baking zingy desserts, or freezing for later. The Tahitian lime tree NZ is also well-suited for container growing, so even smaller spaces or urban gardens can enjoy abundant harvests.

Planting and Caring for Tahitian Lime

Like most citrus, the Tahitian lime loves a sunny, sheltered spot with free-draining soil and regular watering. Protect young plants from frost in cooler climates, and feed in spring and summer with a balanced citrus fertiliser to maximise flower and fruit production. Prune to shape and manage size—Tahitian limes can be kept as compact shrubs or allowed to develop into small trees around 2–4 metres tall.

Good air circulation helps prevent pests and diseases. Mulching around the base retains moisture and suppresses weeds, giving your lime tree the best possible start. If you’re keen to try other limes with different flavours or characteristics, why not add a Lime Bearss, Lime Sublime, or Lime Kaffir (Makrut Lime) to your citrus collection?

Companion Citrus Varieties

If you’re looking to expand your home orchard, companion planting with other citrus varieties encourages a bounty of fruit and provides a longer picking season. For a unique lime with subtle mandarin notes, try Lime Rangpur. Lime Kusaie offers a tropical edge, while bold flavour and fragrance abound in all our citrus selections.

Don’t stop at limes—branch out and enjoy the complex sweetness of Grapefruit 'Golden Special' or Grapefruit 'Cutlers Red'. Add a classic orange with Orange 'Navelina' or extend your harvesting window with Orange 'Valencia'. For a bite-sized treat, consider the unique and tangy Kumquat 'Blush' (Blush Kumquat).
