The 'Tahitian' Lime is a popular and quick-growing shrub that bears masses of medium-sized fruit that are juicy, strongly scented, and have that typical lime flavour. They begin green in summer and ripen to pale yellow in winter. This heavy-cropping, evergreen typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, but can be trimmed as necessary. 'Tahitian' Limes are commonly included in a mixed planting or maintained either in a container or in a courtyard garden.

Why Grow a Tahitian Lime Tree?

Tahitian lime trees are prized not only for their abundant fruits but also for their fuss-free nature. Their limes are larger than the average, nearly seedless, and turn a pale yellow-green when ripe. These versatile limes are perfect for fresh drinks, cocktails, salads, and desserts, as well as zesting into your favourite recipes. A Tahitian lime tree will start producing fruit within a year or two after planting, giving you a continual supply from late autumn through winter.

Planting and Caring for Your Tahitian Lime Tree

The Tahitian lime tree grows well in most NZ climates, especially sheltered spots free from heavy frost. Plant your tree in a sunny position, with well-draining soil, and water regularly. Feed with a citrus-specific fertiliser during spring and summer to encourage plenty of flowers and fruit. With minimal pruning, this lime can be kept bushy and productive. Protection from wind and occasional mulching will ensure healthy growth and juicy limes.

Uses for Tahitian Limes

The mild, aromatic Tahitian lime is perfect for fresh lime juice, key lime pies, or sliced wedges in drinks. Its zest brightens seafood dishes, sauces, or desserts. Grow your own Tahitian lime tree and enjoy the freshest limes right outside your kitchen.
