Lime Tahitian

5 from 3 customers

The 'Tahitian' Lime is a popular and quick-growing shrub that bears masses of medium-sized fruit that are juicy, strongly scented, and have that typical lime flavour. They begin green in summer and ripen to pale yellow in winter. This heavy-cropping, evergreen typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, but can be trimmed as necessary. 'Tahitian' Limes are commonly included in a mixed planting or maintained either in a container or in a courtyard garden.

What Is a Tahitian Lime Tree?

The Tahitian lime tree (Citrus x latifolia) is best known for producing large, round, bright green fruit with a subtly sweet-tart flavour. Unlike the smaller, more acidic Key Lime, this variety yields luscious limes with few seeds and a smooth, thin skin that turns pale yellow as it ripens. The Tahitian lime tree typically grows into a compact, rounded shrub or small tree, reaching around 2–4 metres high, making it perfect for pots, patios, or planting directly in the garden.

Planting and Care in New Zealand

Tahitian lime trees thrive in New Zealand’s mild climates, favouring a sunny, sheltered position and well-drained soil. Enrich the planting site with plenty of organic matter and ensure good air circulation to reduce the risk of pests and disease. Water young trees regularly during dry spells and apply a controlled-release citrus fertiliser in spring and summer to encourage fruiting. For container gardening, choose a dwarf-rooted variety for easier management and higher yield. Explore Citrus Rootstock options if you’re looking for customised growth or disease resistance.

Uses for Tahitian Limes

Few fruits offer the versatility of limes, and the Tahitian lime tree delivers a bountiful harvest perfect for the kitchen. Freshly picked limes can be sliced into drinks, juiced for homemade marinades, or zested onto desserts and savoury dishes. Their mild, aromatic tang is perfect for everything from Thai curries to classic cocktails. Preserving excess limes as cordial or slices in brine is another excellent way to celebrate your backyard crop.

Choosing the Best Citrus Variety

If you're considering expanding your citrus collection, explore other outstanding varieties. The Lime Bearss is a close relative to the Tahitian lime, offering a similar flavour profile with slightly smaller fruit. For something different, try the Lime Sublime or the aromatic Lime Kaffir (Makrut Lime) for its unique leaves used in Asian cuisine. The striking Lime Rangpur and unusual Lime Kusaie are also excellent options for adventurous home gardeners. If you’d like to include oranges, consider the reliable Orange 'Best Seedless' or the richly flavoured Orange Barnfield. For something truly special, citrus hybrids like Tangor 'Dweet' and Tangor 'Ugli' offer unique taste experiences.

Why Grow a Tahitian Lime Tree?

A Tahitian lime tree is an ideal choice for New Zealand gardeners seeking a hardy, productive, and attractive plant. With minimal care, you’ll enjoy glossy green foliage year-round, intoxicating spring blossoms, and a supply of delicious fruit that far surpasses anything you’ll find at the supermarket. Whether grown in pots or as part of your landscape, the Tahitian lime will quickly become a cornerstone of your edible garden.
