What Makes String of Watermelon Special?

String of watermelon is related to the better-known string of pearls, but features oval-shaped, succulent leaves with a gorgeous and distinct pattern. Native to arid regions of southern Africa, Curio herreanus thrives on minimal attention. Each trailing stem is adorned with plump, candy-striped beads that provide a unique textural contrast to other indoor favourites such as Calathea Gekko (Calathea bicajoux Gecko) and Peperomia scandens.

Growing Conditions and Care

String of watermelon thrives in bright, indirect light—think of positioning it beside a sunny window but sheltered from the harshest midday rays. Too much direct sun can scorch the beautiful markings, while too little leads to stretched stems and faded colours. Like other succulents, it prefers a chunky, free-draining potting mix and a watering routine that allows the soil to dry thoroughly between drinks. Overwatering is the most common culprit behind unhealthy plants, so when in doubt, let it be a little dry.

During active growth in the warmer months, a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser every six to eight weeks helps maintain vibrant foliage. String of watermelon is amenable to gentle trimming—simply snip back leggy stems, and you can propagate the cuttings to share with friends or bulk up your own plant.

Styling and Display Ideas

Thanks to its trailing nature, the string of watermelon looks stunning spilling from hanging baskets, wall planters, or a tall shelf where its decorative stems can cascade gracefully. Pair it with architectural plants for layered diversity—consider a grouping with Monstera albo 'variegata' or the petite but striking Ficus lyrata 'Bambino' (Dwarf Fiddle Leaf Fig). For a soft, tropical palette, combine with pastel-foliaged wonders like Caladium Pink Beauty (Pink Caladium).
