Why Choose Stonecrop Sedum?

Stonecrop sedum thrives in New Zealand’s variable climate, handling both sun and dry spells with ease. These succulent perennials are prized for their tough constitution—tolerant of poor soils, shallow sites, and even coastal gardens. Their waterwise qualities make them an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscaping, green roofs, and rockeries. Plus, their nectar-rich flowers support native bees and beneficial pollinators, while their attractive foliage stays tidy through winter.

Among the most popular options, Sedum 'Autumn Joy' is known for its upright habit and spectacular pink blooms that deepen to bronze as the season progresses. For dramatic ground cover, Sedum spurium Voodoo (Stonecrop Voodoo) features handsome mahogany leaves and deep red flowers. For those who love unique texture, consider Sedum dendroideum (Tree Stonecrop)—its branching form and golden flower clusters deliver real architectural interest.

Stonecrop Sedum Varieties

The world of stonecrop sedum is full of colour and diversity. Choose from mat-forming types perfect for edging and walls, to upright varieties that add height and late-season blooms. Sedum dasyphyllum minor (Corsican Stonecrop) creates dense carpets of silvery-blue beads, ideal for spilling over pots. For a touch of variegation, try Sedum spurium 'Tricolor' (Caucasian Stonecrop), celebrated for its pink-edged, cream and green leaves, which bring non-stop interest to any sunny spot.

Growing and Caring for Stonecrop Sedum

Stonecrop sedum is famously easy to grow. Give plants full sun and free-draining soil—anything from gravel to sandy loam will do. Once established, sedums need little to no extra watering, thriving on rainfall alone. They’re perfect choices for xeriscapes, rock gardens, and spots where other plants may struggle. Sedums also do well in containers and hanging baskets, especially the trailing and miniature types. To multiply your favourites, simply clip a stem and let it root—propagation is a breeze.

Design Ideas for Stonecrop Sedum

Whether you’re after reliable ground cover, an easy-care border, or unique statement planters, stonecrop sedum delivers all-year appeal. Mix bold varieties like Sedum 'Autumn Joy' with finer-leaved options such as Sedum dasyphyllum minor (Corsican Stonecrop) to create striking visual contrast. For a colourful living mulch, mass plant low-growing options like Sedum spurium Voodoo (Stonecrop Voodoo) or Sedum spurium 'Tricolor' (Caucasian Stonecrop) at the front of beds and borders.

Stonecrop sedum is a smart solution for busy gardeners who want beauty, resilience, and biodiversity. Explore all our sedum varieties and bring lasting colour and vibrancy to your New Zealand garden.
