Why Choose a Standard Michelia?

Opting for a standard michelia allows you to enjoy all of the glorious features of the michelia genus in a sophisticated, architectural form. These trees are prized for their long flowering period and lush, dark green leaves that stay bright year-round. Their compact shape makes them superb for lining pathways, framing entrances, or standing out as a focal point in garden beds. Standard michelia is also an excellent choice for small spaces or patios, as it can be grown in large pots and maintained at a manageable height with simple pruning.

Popular Standard Michelia Varieties

Our nursery offers a beautiful range of standard michelia options to suit every garden style. Explore these customer favourites and find the perfect match for your space:

Michelia Scented Pearl: Renowned for its creamy white flowers and delightful perfume, this variety brings both elegance and a show-stopping scent to your garden.
Michelia Mixed up Miss: This versatile selection produces abundant, star-shaped flowers and is well-suited to formal plantings or as a container specimen.
Michelia gracipes: With its upright habit and clusters of fragrant white blooms, Michelia gracipes makes a sophisticated statement when grown as a standard.
Michelia Touch of Pink: This unique cultivar offers elegant, softly blushed flowers, making it a perfect choice for those who love subtle colour in the garden.
Michelia Coco: Bring the scent of vanilla and lemon to your garden with this lush evergreen, ideal for standards in sheltered spots.

Growing and Caring for Standard Michelia

Standard michelia prefers a sunny to part-shaded position in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Choose a sheltered site to protect its glossy leaves from wind and frost. These standards thrive with regular moisture, especially during the establishment period, but take care not to overwater. In spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth and prolific flowering. Pruning is simple: trim after flowering to maintain the rounded standard shape and remove spent blooms to encourage even more flowers.

Where to Use Standard Michelia in the Garden

The elegant form of a standard michelia offers endless possibilities in New Zealand gardens. Use them as centrepieces in raised beds, pair them to frame a formal entrance, or choose several to create an avenue effect along a driveway. In courtyards and patio areas, a standard michelia in a decorative container brings year-round beauty and scent right to your door. Many gardeners also combine different varieties, such as Michelia Touch of Pink or Michelia Coco, for a lush, multi-sensory display.
