soft tree fern

The soft tree fern, also known as Dicksonia antarctica or Tasmanian tree fern, is one of the most beloved and iconic ferns in New Zealand gardens. Renowned for its impressive architectural presence, the soft tree fern features an upright, fibrous trunk that supports a lush crown of graceful, arching fronds. This slow-growing evergreen creates a lush, prehistoric vibe and thrives in shaded locations, making it a favourite for woodland gardens, ferneries, and shady landscaping. Whether you're looking to add dramatic texture, underplant trees, or create a tranquil forest atmosphere, the soft tree fern is a stunning and hardy choice for New Zealand conditions.

Features and Growth Habit

The soft tree fern stands out for its stately trunk, which can gradually reach up to 4 to 6 metres in ideal conditions. Its soft, elegant fronds can extend up to 2 metres long, forming a magnificent, symmetrical canopy. Unlike hardier New Zealand natives like Dicksonia squarrosa (Wheki), Dicksonia antarctica has a softer appearance and prefers consistent moisture and shelter from harsh wind and frost. Over time, the soft tree fern develops a thick, fibrous base, adding an eye-catching vertical accent that fits beautifully alongside other shade-loving ferns such as Adiantum hispidulum (Rough Maidenhair Fern) or Asplenium 'Southern Belle' (Chicken Fern).

Ideal Growing Conditions

For best results, plant your soft tree fern in a sheltered, shady spot protected from direct afternoon sun and cold, drying winds. Dicksonia antarctica thrives in humus-rich, well-drained soils that remain consistently moist—mulching around the base helps keep roots cool and retain moisture during dry spells. In particularly hot or exposed sites, regular watering and misting will keep your fern looking lush. For those keen on mixing textures and hues, companion planting with Davallia tasmanii or silver-tinted ferns like Athyrium niponicum brings out the soft, green fronds of Dicksonia antarctica even more.

Planting and Care

Transplant your soft tree fern with care, keeping the rootball and base of the trunk moist. It's important not to bury the trunk deeper than it was originally growing—this ensures healthy new frond growth. Keep watering from above so water trickles down to the growing crown at the top of the trunk, mimicking the plant's natural forest habitat. A yearly application of slow-release, balanced fertiliser in early spring supports vigorous foliage. Aside from the occasional tidy-up of old fronds, the soft tree fern is relatively low-maintenance.

Fern Companions and Design Ideas

The soft tree fern looks spectacular when mass-planted for a dramatic forest ambience or as a single statement specimen in shaded gardens. For more variety, consider pairing it with other New Zealand native ferns such as Dicksonia fibrosa (Wheki), or contrast its soft textures with bold leaf shapes from Doodia squarrosa. Smaller ferns like Adiantum hispidulum (Rough Maidenhair Fern) add fine detail at ground level, creating an authentic layered fernery effect.

Bring a touch of ancient elegance to your landscape with the soft tree fern—perfect for shaded areas and essential for any New Zealand garden enthusiast who appreciates the unique beauty of tree ferns.
