Why Choose Small Fruit Trees in NZ?

Small fruit trees are ideal for urban gardeners, renters, and anyone with a cosy garden. They require less space, are easier to maintain and harvest, and many are suitable for growing in pots. Compact trees also allow you to cultivate several different varieties in a single area, extending your harvest season and increasing biodiversity in your garden.

Top Varieties of Small Fruit Trees NZ

Plums

Plum trees thrive throughout New Zealand, and there are excellent compact varieties available. The Plum Omega is a reliable, easy-to-grow tree that produces juicy, dark red fruit in late summer. For something a little different, the Plum 'Greengage' is a heritage favourite, renowned for its sweet and richly flavoured green fruit. Both are excellent options for small gardens and can be maintained with light annual pruning.

Apples

Nothing beats the taste of a homegrown apple, and small-fruiting varieties are perfect for NZ gardens. The Apple Liberty (Liberty Apple) is a disease-resistant cultivar with crisp, juicy fruit ready to pick in mid-to-late season. The Apple Wandin Glory (Wandin Glory Apple) offers a unique flavour and is great for eating fresh or cooking. With small fruit trees NZ gardeners can enjoy freshly picked apples, even from compact spaces.

Olives

For lovers of Mediterranean flavours, the Olive El Greco brings the romance of olive groves to your backyard. This compact tree adapts well to New Zealand’s conditions and is well-suited to growing in large pots or sunny borders. Olives are evergreen, adding beauty year-round in addition to yielding delicious fruit.
