Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Why Choose a Small Cherry Blossom Tree?

Small cherry blossom trees are an exceptional choice for New Zealand gardens where space might be at a premium. Their modest height, often between 2-4 metres at maturity, means they don’t overshadow neighbouring plants or obstruct views. Many of these ornamental cherries are also tolerant of our local climate, thriving in both full sun and partial shade with some basic care. Whether you’re designing a front yard statement piece or seeking a delicate patio tree, the small cherry blossom tree provides an abundance of pastel pink or white flowers each year, followed by lush green foliage and sometimes brilliant autumn colour.

Popular Varieties of Small Cherry Blossom Trees

One of the most popular ornamental options is the Prunus Accolade. Renowned for its graceful arching branches and masses of semi-double, soft pink flowers, Prunus Accolade stays relatively compact, making it a favourite for small gardens or feature planting.

While some cherry trees are grown primarily for their flowers, you might also consider fruiting varieties that combine beauty with harvest. If you love the idea of delicate blossoms and homegrown cherries, explore specialty varieties like Cherry Rainier, cherished for its yellow fruit and springtime flower display, or Cherry Dawson with its deep pink buds and classic cherry flavour. For those seeking unique options, Cherry Modesto and Cherry Griotella Frumi offer intriguing alternatives, each with their own ornamental and edible appeal.

Planting and Caring for a Small Cherry Blossom Tree

Getting the best from your small cherry blossom tree is easy with a few expert tips. Choose a well-drained position in full sun or light shade—good air circulation and sunlight boost flower production and keep the tree healthy. Prepare the planting area with quality compost and mulch yearly to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water regularly during dry periods, especially when establishing. Most small cherry blossom trees require only minimal pruning to maintain shape and encourage strong growth.

Be vigilant for pests typical to stone fruit, but remember these ornamental trees are generally hardy with the right site and attention. In autumn, enjoy a vibrant show of colour, and in spring, expect your garden to glow with spectacular blossoms that attract pollinators and inspire admiration from all who see them.

Enhance Small Spaces with Year-Round Beauty

A small cherry blossom tree is the perfect way to celebrate the changing seasons and elevate your home’s kerb appeal. Whether you favour pure ornamentals like Prunus Accolade or the added bonus of fruit with options like Cherry Rainier, your garden can deliver both beauty and bounty on a modest scale. Explore our range of small cherry blossom trees and discover how effortlessly you can enjoy spring’s most enchanting display, year after year.
