What is Schefflera Amate?

Schefflera amate is a popular cultivar of Schefflera arboricola, also known as the dwarf umbrella tree. What sets it apart is its larger, shiny, deep-green leaflets that splay out like the familiar spokes of an umbrella. Native to Taiwan, this plant is well-suited to New Zealand’s indoor environments, thriving in moderate, indirect light. The robust form of Schefflera amate makes it ideal for adding lush greenery to corners, hallways, and desks without demanding constant attention.

Caring for Schefflera Amate

One of the standout traits of Schefflera amate is its low-maintenance nature. It flourishes in bright, indirect light but tolerates lower light levels, making it adaptable for various indoor spots. Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, and avoid overwatering—well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes will keep your amate healthy. Schefflera amate benefits from regular misting to mimic its native humid climate, especially in heated or air-conditioned rooms.

Keep your plant looking its best by wiping the broad leaves occasionally to remove dust. Fertilise every two to three months during spring and summer with a balanced liquid plant food.

Styling Ideas and Plant Combinations

Schefflera amate’s upright growth and rich green foliage make it a perfect focal point in living rooms or as part of a tropical plant display. Pair it with plants that offer contrasting textures and colours, like the vibrant Anthurium Success Red, the silvery Ficus 'Ice Caps', or the striking Alocasia cuprea. For a lush statement, group with other eye-catching species such as Hoya pubicalyx 'Splash' or colourful foliage like Hypoestes phyllostachya.

Related Varieties and Family Members

If you’ve fallen in love with Schefflera amate, consider exploring its many fascinating relatives. For a similar but compact look, the Schefflera Green Goblin (Green Arboricola) offers all the charm in a smaller package. For variegated foliage enthusiasts, Schefflera arboricola variegated dazzles with splashes of creamy yellow on green leaves. The larger Schefflera actinophylla, sometimes called the Octopus Tree, adds dramatic height, while Schefflera Hong Kong and Schefflera digitata (Seven Finger) offer their own unique leaf shapes and personalities.

Why Choose Schefflera Amate?

With their graceful silhouette, resilience, and ability to cleanse indoor air, Schefflera amate plants deliver contemporary style and practical benefits. Their minimal requirements make them perfect for New Zealand’s busy households or workplaces. If you’re seeking a hardy, beautiful indoor plant, Schefflera amate is a top choice—with a whole family of other scheffleras waiting to be discovered.
