Why Choose Scented Azaleas for Your NZ Garden?

Many traditional azaleas are grown for their masses of colourful blooms, but scented azaleas are prized for their gentle perfumes as well. In New Zealand’s temperate climate, scented azaleas thrive in dappled shade and well-drained, acidic soils—making them excellent companions under deciduous trees or on the shady side of the house. These beautiful shrubs add structure and scent to mixed borders, woodland gardens, or as feature plants in patio pots. Plus, with continuous breeding and selection, today’s options include both classic deciduous types with fragrant flowers and evergreen varieties that offer attractive foliage year-round.

Best Scented Azaleas NZ Gardeners Should Grow

Explore our selection of top-performing scented azaleas NZ plant lovers trust for their fragrance and reliable garden performance:

Tips for Growing Fragrant Azaleas in New Zealand

To get the most out of your scented azaleas, plant them in moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil with good drainage. Partial shade is ideal, especially in the warmer regions of New Zealand where hot afternoon sun can scorch the foliage. Mulch with pine bark or leaf mould to maintain soil acidity and moisture. Water regularly during dry periods, and avoid lime or alkaline fertilisers. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth for next year’s blooms.

Extend the Season with Repeat Flowering Scented Azaleas

Some newer varieties, like Azalea Autumn Lilac (Autumn Lilac Azalea), provide scented blooms not only in spring but again in autumn—prolonging your garden's fragrance season. Plant these alongside your spring-flowering azaleas for continual scent and a sequence of floral displays.
