Why Choose Sago Palms for Your NZ Garden?

Sago palms, known botanically as Cycas revoluta, are not true palms but cycads—ancient plants with attractive, feather-like foliage. They are beloved for their drought tolerance and low maintenance needs, perfect for NZ gardeners seeking resilient, low-fuss greenery. Sago palms grow well in containers or directly in the ground, even tolerating light frosts and coastal weather once established. Their symmetrical crown and bold form make them ideal feature plants for entrances, verandas, or statement pots.

For those interested in expanding their collection, consider Cycas revoluta as a classic favourite. Looking for something unique? The lush Cycas thouarsii offers a larger, broader leaf form and tropical flair, suitable for sheltered outdoor spots.

How to Grow and Care for Sago Palms in NZ

Sago palms are extremely adaptable but will perform best in free-draining soil with access to bright, indirect light. In the warmer regions of New Zealand, they can be planted outdoors year-round. In cooler areas, container growing allows you to shift your plant to a sheltered spot during cold snaps. Water moderately, letting the soil dry a little between drinks, and feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser once a year. Pruning is minimal—remove any aged, yellowing fronds at the base to keep your palm looking its best.

If you’re passionate about palms, our range also includes hardy species like the graceful Rhopalostylis Pitt Island (Pitt Island Nikau Palm), the towering Washingtonia robusta (Mexican Fan Palm), and the cold-tolerant Trachycarpus fortunei (Chinese Windmill Palm).
