What is a Sago Palm Houseplant?

Although commonly called the sago palm, the sago palm houseplant is actually a cycad, not a true palm. Its feathery foliage and symmetrical growth habit have made it a favourite among indoor gardeners. Featuring glossy, deep green fronds that arch gracefully from a sturdy central trunk, the sago palm houseplant brings both structure and a lush, prehistoric vibe to your plant collection.

How to Care for Your Sago Palm Houseplant

Growing a sago palm houseplant indoors is relatively straightforward, especially with the right approach:

Complementary and Alternative Indoor Palms

Want to expand your indoor jungle? Alongside the classic sago palm houseplant, consider adding other tropical stunners. Cycas revoluta shares the sago palm's bold silhouette and is equally easy to manage indoors. For a slightly different look, Cycas thouarsii offers broader, arching fronds, while Dypsis baronii charms with its more slender, multi-stemmed habit.

If you're after soft foliage, the Chamaedorea elegans (Parlour Palm) is a classic, shade-tolerant choice that thrives in low-light corners. For colour and textural contrast, consider the eye-catching Schefflera arboricola variegated, which pairs beautifully with sago palms in mixed displays.

Why Choose a Sago Palm Houseplant?

The sago palm houseplant is not only visually stunning but also enduring and low-fuss. Its slow-growing nature means it remains compact for many years, making it ideal for tabletops and floors alike. With proper positioning and care, you'll enjoy its sculptural form and evergreen fronds year-round.
