Why Choose a Sago Palm?

The sago palm, known botanically as Cycas revoluta, is renowned for its striking, glossy foliage and robust form. Despite its palm-like appearance, it’s actually a cycad, prized for its slow, steady growth and remarkable resilience. Sago palms are tolerant of a range of conditions, including coastal winds and partial shade, making them an excellent choice for New Zealand gardens from Auckland to Dunedin. The slow growth ensures they stay manageable in size, whether planted directly in the landscape or grown in pots.

Sago Palm Care and Placement

Sago palms thrive in well-drained soil and enjoy a sunny to partially shaded spot. They’re drought-tolerant once established and only need occasional watering, making them a superb option for busy garden lovers. Be mindful that all parts of the sago palm are toxic if ingested—display them where children and pets cannot reach. With minimal pruning and routine feeding in spring, your sago palm will continue to offer lush greenery for years.
