Why Grow Russian Sage in NZ?

Russian sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) thrives in the diverse climates of Aotearoa, from coastal gardens to central city beds. Valued for its drought tolerance and robust nature, it will reward you with a long season of colour from mid-summer until autumn. Its aromatic, finely cut foliage deters pests and provides year-round interest, while bees and butterflies flock to its prolific flower spikes. Shop our range, including the popular Perovskia atriplicifolia (Perovskia plant) and the statuesque Perovskia Blue Spire (Russian Sage Plant), both available for delivery NZ-wide.

How to Plant and Care for Russian Sage

Planting Russian sage is straightforward with just a few key tips. Choose a sunny site with well-draining soil—sandy or gravelly spots suit it perfectly. Water regularly until established, then enjoy its resilience through dry spells. Prune back stems in late winter or early spring to encourage bushiness and maintain a tidy shape. Russian sage is a perfect mate for ornamental grasses and other sun-loving perennials.

For more diverse sage choices, explore our herb section, including Salvia officinalis Purpurea (Sage Herb), which brings culinary value and purple-tinted leaves, and Salvia farinacea Victoria (Mealy Cup Sage), known for its dense blue flower spikes.

Companion Plants and Landscaping Ideas

Create a dynamic, drought-friendly planting scheme with Russian sage as a backbone. Pair it with fellow Mediterranean plants or contrast its soft texture with the sturdy yellow spires of Phlomis russeliana (Turkish Sage), another striking perennial for Kiwi gardens. Russian sage also works beautifully in mass plantings, containers, and cottage borders.
