Why Choose Russian Sage?

Russian sage is beloved for good reason. With a graceful, airy structure and long-lasting flowers, it’s perfect for adding height, softness, and a Mediterranean feel to your garden. This hardy perennial is especially suited to New Zealand’s diverse climates, performing well in full sun and free-draining soils. After establishing, Russian sage is highly drought-tolerant and resists common garden pests, making it simple for even beginner gardeners to achieve stunning results.

If you want to explore the classic form, browse our Perovskia atriplicifolia (Perovskia plant) and see why it’s a top pick for landscape designers and home gardeners alike. For a standout cultivar, the Perovskia Blue Spire (Russian Sage Plant) delivers vibrant colour and robust growth, creating a magical haze of blue across your planting beds all summer long.

Growing and Using Russian Sage in Your Garden

Incorporating Russian sage into your planting scheme is easy. Choose a sunny spot with plenty of airflow, and plant en masse for a dramatic effect, or mix with companion plants like grasses, roses, and summer perennials for a textured look. Russian sage pairs beautifully with other dry-loving species such as Phlomis russeliana (Turkish Sage), adding contrast with its bold whorls of yellow flowers and architectural stems.

Not only is Russian sage deer- and rabbit-resistant, but its aromatic foliage makes it a resilient choice where other plants struggle. Its flowers attract bees and butterflies, increasing biodiversity in your backyard oasis. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a second flush of colour, or leave them standing for winter interest and structure.

Complement Your Russian Sage Plantings

Complete your Mediterranean garden palette with related drought-tolerant plants. Consider the vibrant scarlet blooms of Salvia Embers Wish for a fiery contrast, or add culinary edge with Salvia officinalis Purpurea (Sage Herb), perfect for edging beds or growing in containers.
