Why Choose the Royal Sunset Climbing Rose?

The Royal Sunset Climbing Rose is appreciated not only for its unique colour shades, which shift beautifully with the sunlight, but also for its strong, sweet perfume that floats on garden breezes. Growing up to 3-4 metres high, it’s perfect for training along wires, walls, or archways, where the cascading flowers can be best enjoyed. This variety is known for its robust constitution, handling New Zealand’s varied climates well, and showing good resistance to common rose diseases. With proper care, your Royal Sunset will reward you with a spectacular display from late spring right through to autumn.

Planting and Care Tips for Royal Sunset Climbing Rose

For the healthiest, most floriferous Royal Sunset Climbing Rose, planting in an open, sunny position with fertile, free-draining soil is essential. Space your roses generously to allow good air movement and minimise the risk of fungal issues. In winter or early spring, prune to shape, remove spent wood, and encourage strong flowering canes.

Mulch heavily in early spring to retain moisture and keep roots cool, and feed with a balanced, specialist rose fertiliser. Regular deadheading through the warmer months will encourage further flushes of blooms. If you’re searching for companions to create a diverse and fragrant climbing rose display, consider pairing Royal Sunset with classic climbers like Rose Albertine or the soft pink Rose Ann Turner.

Ideal Companions and Alternatives

Royal Sunset’s strong growth and colour combine beautifully with other climbing and rambling roses. For white-flowering contrast and old-world grace, the Rosa banksiae 'Alba' (Banksia Rose) is a charming partner. Prefer yellow? Rosa banksiae 'Lutea' (Banksia Rose) delivers delicate, butter-hued clusters in spring. For smaller spaces or those seeking continuous flower power, Rose Cecil Brunner offers a compact, fragrant alternative.
