Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Why Choose a Real Cherry Blossom Tree for Your Garden?

Nothing compares to the spectacle of a real cherry blossom tree in full bloom. The delicate petals and graceful structure create a show-stopping centrepiece, while their manageable size ensures they fit gardens of all scales. Cherry blossom trees are also relatively low-maintenance, thriving in most well-drained soils and performing beautifully in New Zealand’s temperate climate. Their seasonal cycle—from winter buds, to spring flowers, to lush green foliage—provides year-round interest and a sense of anticipation unique among garden trees.

Best Varieties of Real Cherry Blossom Tree

If you’re searching for a real cherry blossom tree with unrivalled flower displays, the Prunus Accolade stands out for its generous clusters of semi-double, rose-pink blossoms. This hardy hybrid is a favourite throughout New Zealand, prized for its graceful arching branches and early spring performance.

For gardeners who appreciate both ornamental beauty and a harvest of cherries, consider fruiting selections such as Cherry Rainier, which boasts attractive spring flowers followed by deliciously sweet, yellow-blushed fruit. Other exceptional varieties to explore include Cherry Dawson, known for its abundant yield, and Cherry Modesto, which offers a combination of showy blooms and reliable cropping.

Growing and Caring for Your Real Cherry Blossom Tree

Plant your real cherry blossom tree in a sunny spot with shelter from harsh winds to ensure the best flower display. Amend the planting site with compost or well-rotted manure to promote strong root growth. Regular watering is important during the first few years, especially through dry periods. Pruning is usually limited to removing dead or crowded branches, ideally completed just after flowering.

Feed your tree with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in late winter to support healthy blossoms and vigorous leaf growth. Protect young trees from root competition by keeping the base weed-free and consider a mulch of bark chips to lock in moisture.

Enhancing Your Garden with Cherry Blossom and Fruit Cherries

While the classic real cherry blossom tree is valued for its ornamental display, you can complement your garden with fruiting varieties as well. Add the beautifully flowering Cherry Griotella Frumi and enjoy an extended cherry season, from spectacular spring blooms to harvest time treats.

A real cherry blossom tree offers the perfect blend of beauty, seasonal interest, and pollinator attraction for New Zealand gardens. Browse our handpicked range, including Prunus Accolade, Cherry Rainier, Cherry Dawson, Cherry Modesto, and Cherry Griotella Frumi, to find the ideal tree for your landscape dreams.
