Popular Purple Hydrangea Varieties for Your Garden

If you’re searching for the perfect purple hydrangea to complete your landscape, it pays to know which varieties thrive in New Zealand’s climates. Here are some top picks to consider:

Hydrangea ‘Royal Purple’

For those seeking rich, royal tones, Hydrangea 'Royal Purple' is a stand-out among purple hydrangea varieties. This gorgeous shrub boasts large clusters of deep purple blooms that intensify as the flowering season progresses. Its strong stems and lush, deep green foliage make it an excellent feature shrub for borders or large pots.

Hydrangea serrata Preziosa

Known for its attractive colour-changing blooms, Hydrangea serrata Preziosa features a romantic mix of pinks, mauves, and violet shades that evolve as the flowers mature. It’s especially well-suited for partially shaded spots and compact gardens, bringing a touch of elegance and colour even to smaller spaces.

Hydrangea Geoffrey Chadbund

Hydrangea Geoffrey Chadbund is another delightful addition to the purple hydrangea varieties available in New Zealand. Its generous flower heads start as soft pink or blue, developing into a beautiful lavender or purple tone as the season goes on. This variety is a favourite for mixed shrub borders and cottage garden schemes.

Hydrangea Mariko

With its compact form and spectacular flower clusters, Hydrangea Mariko is ideal for urban and small-space gardens. It typically displays shades of violet and purple, especially when grown in acidic soils. Mariko’s prolific blooms make it a top choice for creating bold splashes of colour in pots and along pathways.

Hydrangea Masja

Don’t overlook Hydrangea Masja if you love intense colour and a reliable, long bloomer. This variety’s flowers may begin with reddish tones but transform into jewel-like shades of purple and magenta under the right soil conditions. It’s perfect as an anchor plant in cottage gardens or as a lively container specimen.

Tips for Enhancing Purple Tones

The precise hue of your purple hydrangea varieties often depends on soil pH. Acidic soils (pH below 6) can produce deeper purples and blues, while alkaline soils (above pH 7) favour pinks and reds. Add garden sulphur or aluminium sulfate for a richer purple. Ensure hydrangeas receive morning sun and midday shade, and mulch well to keep roots cool and moist.
