Features of Purple Grevillea

Purple grevillea varieties are cherished for their bold flower clusters ranging in shades from deep violet to lilac, appearing through much of the year. The evergreen, finely divided foliage provides year-round structure and makes an excellent backdrop for borders or native plantings. These versatile shrubs typically range from 1 to 2.5 metres high, making them ideal for screens, windbreaks, or feature specimens.

How to Grow and Care for Purple Grevillea

Purple grevillea thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It’s highly adaptable and can tolerate coastal sites and light frosts, making it perfectly suited for many regions across New Zealand. Once established, watering can be minimal, although a deep soak during extended dry periods keeps plants blooming. Mulching around the base in spring retains moisture and suppresses weeds. Occasional light pruning after flowering helps to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth.

Landscaping Uses

Incorporate purple grevillea into mixed native borders, or pair it with groundcovers such as Grevillea Fanfare (Grevillea austraflora Fanfare) to create layers of texture and colour. For a show-stopping display, try mass planting or integrate with other striking shrubs like Grevillea Fireworks (Fireworks Grevillea) and Grevillea Knockout (Knockout Grevillea). The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, making purple grevillea excellent for wildlife-friendly gardens.

Companion Planting Ideas

Maximise contrast and seasonal interest by combining purple grevillea with flowering perennials. The tall, violet-blue spires of Salvia Amistad echo and complement grevillea’s purple blooms, while the deep, dusky foliage of Corylus maxima Purpurea creates a rich tapestry in mixed plantings. Grevilleas are also wonderful alongside other drought-tolerant natives and ornamental grasses.

Why Choose Purple Grevillea?

Purple grevillea is a resilient, long-flowering shrub that brings colour and birdlife to your garden with very little effort. Whether as a specimen plant, hedging, or part of a native border, it delivers both beauty and ecological benefits. Explore our extensive range of grevilleas and discover why New Zealand gardeners rate purple grevillea as one of the best choices for style, sustainability, and effortless flair.
