Why Choose Meryta sinclairii (Puka Tree)?

The puka tree is prized for its broad, leathery, evergreen foliage and lush, green canopy. Growing up to 8 metres tall in ideal conditions, Meryta sinclairii is perfect as a sculptural specimen, feature plant, living screen, or striking backdrop. Its large leaves are not only visually stunning but also create a true sense of the tropics, helping soften hard architectural lines and adding year-round structure to your planting scheme.

Puka’s coastal robustness and tolerance to wind make it a top pick for gardens in Auckland, Northland, and other temperate regions. For those in cooler parts of NZ, Meryta sinclairii will perform best in protected microclimates or as a container plant that can be relocated during winter.

Planting and Care Tips

When establishing your puka tree, select a well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter for best results. Plant in sun to partial shade, and remember that shelter from cold, drying winds will help young trees thrive. Regular watering during the first summer is important, but once established, puka is relatively drought tolerant.

Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring, and prune only lightly to maintain its natural form. If you’re interested in variegated varieties, our Meryta sinclairii 'Cream Edge' offers beautiful creamy margins, while Meryta sinclairii 'Moonlight' features striking pale foliage, both ideal for adding a unique twist to your planting palette.

Pairing Puka with Other Standout Trees

The architectural appeal of the puka tree pairs effortlessly with a range of New Zealand natives and exotic accent trees. For contrasting colour and delicate foliage, consider Japanese maples such as Acer 'Beni Maiko' or Acer palmatum 'Roseo Marginatum'. If you’re after a lush, layered look, try nearby planting with the unique Pittosporum turneri or the dramatic Magnolia dealbata (Cloud Forest Magnolia). For edible landscaping, why not complement your design with a Pyrus ussuriensis, which brings spring blossom and autumn fruit.
