Discover the Beauty of Meryta sinclairii

Meryta sinclairii, commonly called Puka or Puka tree, stands out in both formal and naturalistic garden designs. Easily identified by its large glossy leaves and sculptural form, the Puka plant NZ adapts well to warm, sheltered spots and tolerates salty coastal winds. While it thrives outdoors in frost-free regions, it's also suitable as a striking container specimen on patios or courtyards.

Growing and Caring for Puka Plant NZ

Caring for your Puka plant is straightforward with a few simple tips. Puka thrives best in rich, well-drained soil and appreciates regular moisture, particularly during dry months. Plant it in partial to full sun and protect from harsh frosts for rapid establishment. Pruning isn’t necessary but can help shape young plants or control their size in smaller gardens. Adding organic mulch preserves soil moisture and suppresses weeds around the root zone.

Unique Varieties and Companion Trees

For gardeners after something unique, consider Meryta sinclairii 'Cream Edge', a distinctive cultivar with stunning cream-edged leaves, perfect for adding a touch of variegation. Another striking selection is Meryta sinclairii 'Moonlight', admired for its soft, luminous foliage. Both forms share the hardy attributes of the classic Puka while offering extra ornamental flair.

Pairing Puka with other trees can create a multi-layered, visually engaging landscape. Tall, graceful species like Salix babylonica weeping willow, textured Fraxinus Annesbrook ash, or spring-flowering Amelanchier alnifolia 'Obelisk' can provide seasonal contrast. For rich foliage tones, Corylus maxima Purpurea adds deep purple leaves, while Prunus Felix Jury delivers brilliant blossom display.
