Why Choose Puka (Meryta sinclairii) for Your Garden?

Meryta sinclairii is prized for its bold foliage and striking silhouette. Its huge, leathery leaves create instant impact, making it particularly popular for subtropical or resort-style landscapes. Puka is tolerant of coastal winds, sea spray, and variable conditions, thriving in both full sun and partial shade. It’s also relatively low maintenance, with little attention required once established. As an evergreen, Puka ensures year-round structure and lushness for your outdoor spaces.

Ideal Growing Conditions for Puka New Zealand

Though Puka New Zealand is mostly found in coastal forests of the North Island, it adapts well to a range of garden types when given the right start. Choose a sheltered site with well-drained soil. Water regularly in the first year to help roots become established, but thereafter Puka is quite drought-tolerant. Protect younger plants from harsh frosts, as they can be sensitive to cold while young. Regular feeding in spring and autumn will help keep the foliage rich and glossy.

Landscape Uses and Companions

The statuesque Meryta sinclairii is perfect for use as a feature tree, courtyard specimen, or as part of a sub-tropical border. It combines beautifully with other statement plants like Styrax hemsleyana (Chinese Snowbell Tree), and can contrast well with the upright form of Prunus Amanogawa. For shelter or screening, consider pairing Puka with Podocarpus Ardmore Green (Podocarpus totara Ardmore Green) for year-round privacy and structure.
