prunus snow

Prunus Snow, also known as Prunus Falling Snow, is an exceptional ornamental cherry prized for its cascading, elegant habit and stunning late winter to early spring display of snow-white blossoms. This graceful small tree is a favourite for New Zealand gardens, where its arching branches create a weeping fountain of pure white flowers, followed by lush green foliage through summer and golden tones in autumn. Whether planted as a feature specimen, used in driveways, or added to cottage and woodland borders, Prunus Snow adds year-round interest and a sense of tranquillity to any landscape.

Prunus Falling Snow

Prunus Falling Snow is a variety of Flowering Cherry grown for its pendulous growth and fantastic flowering. It features masses of single, white flowers which are borne before the foliage emerges. The foliage emerges a fresh green colour in spring, ages to dark green, then develops yellow, orange, and red tones in autumn before falling. The branches are held with a pendulous manner as it grows to 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide. Prunus Falling Snow is a stunning tree and is commonly used in smaller gardens, grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, included in Japanese and cottage gardens, or planted around outdoor living areas.

Features of Prunus Falling Snow

Prunus Snow stands out for its weeping growth habit and profuse flower show. Reaching a height and spread of around three to four metres, it fits beautifully in compact spaces or alongside larger trees such as Acer 'Armstrong' and Quercus cerris. In late winter to early spring, masses of single, snowy-white blooms cover the bare branches, creating a spectacular sight reminiscent of freshly fallen snow. As the season progresses, lush green foliage provides a fresh look, turning soft gold and amber before leaves fall in autumn.

Best Uses for Prunus Snow in the Garden

Prunus Snow is highly versatile and makes a dramatic statement as a specimen tree in lawns, courtyards, or near patios where its flowering performance can be appreciated up close. Its compact size and arching shape are also ideal for smaller gardens or as a weeping focal point alongside taller varieties like Prunus Accolade, Prunus Amanogawa, and Prunus Kanzan. Prunus Snow looks elegant when underplanted with spring bulbs or paired with native trees such as Schefflera digitata (Seven Finger) and Streblus banksii (Turepo) for layered planting.

Prunus Snow is also excellent in Japanese-inspired landscapes, around water features, or grouped with other flowering cherries like Prunus Awanui and Prunus Felix Jury. Consider planting along driveways or paths where the weeping branches can create a dramatic archway in spring.

Growing and Caring for Prunus Snow

Prunus Snow thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. For best flowering, choose a sheltered spot away from strong winds. Pruning is generally unnecessary, except to remove dead wood or to shape lightly after flowering. Mulch in spring to conserve moisture, and water during dry spells, especially while young.

This compact ornamental cherry is generally low-maintenance and shows good resistance to most pests and diseases. As with most prunus species, it is wise to keep an eye out for signs of leaf spot or aphids, dealing with any problems early.
