Why Proteas Make a Brilliant Addition to Kiwi Gardens

Proteas are admired for their bold blooms, long-lasting colour, and drought tolerance. These evergreen shrubs make a statement in both contemporary and classic landscapes, thriving in New Zealand’s well-drained soils and coastal environments. Their architectural flowers attract nectar-feeding birds and pollinators, adding life and interest to your backyard.

While searching for "protea plant bunnings" is a common starting point, you’ll often find just a limited range at big box retailers. As a dedicated nursery, we offer both classic and rare protea species, all expertly propagated and acclimated to local conditions for better success in your garden.

Explore some of our most popular proteas:

Protea compacta: Loved for its upright growth and soft pink blooms, perfect for mass planting or specimen displays.
Protea obtusifolia (Sugarbush Protea): Known for robust growth and large, creamy flowers that thrive in tough spots.
Protea grandiceps: Features magnificent scarlet heads and leathery foliage—an outstanding focal shrub.
Protea Fiery Sunset: Offers fiery orange-red blooms that light up the garden from autumn through winter.
Protea Sylvia: Striking deep pink flowers and a compact form make this a fantastic choice for colourful borders or containers.

Tips for Growing Protea Successfully in New Zealand

Choose a sunny position: Proteas love full sun and free-draining, slightly acidic soils.
Avoid overwatering: These hardy plants are drought tolerant once established—too much water can lead to root problems.
Minimal fertiliser: Use a low-phosphorus fertiliser suitable for native plants, as proteas are sensitive to high-phosphorus levels.
Prune lightly: Trim spent flower heads after blooming to encourage fresh, bushy growth and better flowering next season.
