Why Plant a Pohutukawa Tree in Christchurch?

Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa), often called the New Zealand Christmas Tree, is loved for its vibrant red flowers that burst into colour in summer, attracting birds and pollinators. Traditionally associated with coastal regions, pohutukawa is surprisingly resilient and can thrive in a range of conditions. In Christchurch, with the right planting spot—full sun and free-draining soil—your pohutukawa will thrive and grow into a feature tree that can withstand winds and drought once established.

Popular Pohutukawa Varieties for Sale in Christchurch

We’re passionate about providing diverse pohutukawa options to suit every garden style. If you’re looking for a classic tree, you can’t go wrong with Metrosideros excelsa (Pōhutukawa). For more compact gardens, Metrosideros 'Maori Princess' offers a refined upright form with deep green foliage and abundant blooms.

Other popular choices include Metrosideros 'Spring Fire', known for its fiery flower display, and Metrosideros 'Moonlight', which features striking cream flowers instead of the traditional red. If you’re after a pohutukawa with a unique twist, Metrosideros 'Tahiti' delivers a compact shrub form, perfect for tight spaces or container planting.

Tips for Growing Pohutukawa in Canterbury

While the pohutukawa has a reputation as a coastal tree, many Christchurch gardeners enjoy great results by selecting a sunny, sheltered position. Prepare the soil well, mixing in some organic compost, and water deeply after planting. Young pohutukawa benefit from protection from heavy frosts, but as they mature, their tough nature makes them an ideal long-term choice for local gardens.

Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, and light pruning will shape your tree as it grows. Feed each spring with a slow-release fertiliser to encourage lush foliage and prolific flowering.
