Why Choose a Pohutukawa Tree for Your Auckland Garden?

Pohutukawa trees are much-loved for their resilience—a perfect fit for Auckland’s variable weather and salty coastal winds. Known for their dramatic summer flowers, these trees offer shade, wildlife support, and a true sense of place. Their adaptability means they thrive in sandy soils and coastal locations but are just as happy inland with free-draining soils and full sun.

If you are looking for a refined and upright growing form, Metrosideros 'Maori Princess' is a wonderful selection. This pohutukawa variety is ideal for more compact gardens or as a striking feature tree. For those preferring smaller flowering shrubs, Metrosideros 'Tahiti' delivers intense red blooms on a more manageable plant, perfect for courtyards and container growing.

Pohutukawa Tree Care in Auckland

Pohutukawa trees are relatively low-maintenance, making them perfect for Auckland gardeners. Plant them in a sunny spot with well-drained soil for best results. Young trees benefit from regular watering during establishment, and an annual application of mulch helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Once established, pohutukawa is drought and wind tolerant.

Pruning can be done in late summer to shape young trees or to remove any dead wood. These trees rarely suffer from pests or diseases, and their robust nature makes them an enduring feature in local landscapes.
