Why Planting Griselinia Spacing Matters

Griselinia is a fast-growing, hardy New Zealand native that’s a top choice for hedging. The right planting griselinia spacing gives roots room to develop, helps each plant reach its full potential, and encourages even, bushy coverage. Crowded planting can lead to competition for water and nutrients, resulting in leggy or sparse growth. Too much space, and your hedge will take longer to fill in.

Recommended Spacing for Griselinia Hedges

For a classic hedge using Griselinia littoralis, the general recommendation is 75 cm apart for standard container-grown plants. This allows each plant to spread naturally and quickly knit together with its neighbours for a seamless effect. For instant impact or faster coverage, you can reduce the spacing to 50 cm, especially if you’re planting smaller potted stock.

If you’re planting a larger specimen or want a slightly looser, informal look, spacing of up to 1 metre may suit. For double row hedges, stagger the rows using the same or slightly wider spacing to achieve maximum density.

Spacing for Different Griselinia Varieties

The exact planting griselinia spacing can vary depending on the cultivar you choose.

Tips for Planting and Caring for Griselinia

Creating the Ideal Griselinia Hedge

Selecting the right planting griselinia spacing sets your hedge up for success. Combine this with quality plants like Griselinia littoralis, Griselinia 'Ardmore Emerald', Griselinia 'Whenuapai', Griselinia 'Gecko Green', or Griselinia littoralis variegata (Variegated Griselinia), and you’ll enjoy a robust, beautiful feature in your garden for years to come. If you need advice on choosing the right varieties or how to achieve the best results with planting griselinia spacing, our nursery team is always happy to help.
