Planning on planting grass seed in winter in NZ? You’re not alone. Many Kiwi gardeners wonder if establishing a lush lawn is possible during the colder months. While spring and autumn are typically the preferred seasons, winter can be an opportunity with the right approach and grass varieties. In this guide, we’ll explore how to give your lawn the best chance at success, recommend winter-hardy seeds, and share tips for getting your lawn off to a great start.

Kikuyu grass is suited to warmer regions and coastal areas where hot and humid summers are less well suited to other turf species. The variety of Kikuyu seed sold by The Plant Company is Regal Green which produces a carpet of lush green leaves and tolerates both summer drought and high humidity. It may brown off during winter as it goes dormant, but this is generally only for a short period. The ideal mowing height is 25 mm and seeding rate is 10 grams per square metre. Using less Kikuyu seed than this and weed intrusion can become problematic. Kikuyu lawns are well suited to regions from Waikato north and this product is 100% pure Kikuyu seed.

Miscanthus sinensis is an ornamental grass that grows as a clump of narrow, arching, green leaves. The colouring gives a light silver-green effect to the foliage, hence the common name, Japanese Silver Grass. Tall spikes of plum-like flowers are borne in summer, which are cream with a pink tone as they grow to 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide. Miscanthus sinensis is commonly included in mixed plantings, planted around a water feature, used as a backdrop for other plants, or included in borders.
