Tarata, Lemonwood

Pittosporum eugenioides, commonly known as Tarata or Lemonwood, is a fast-growing native New Zealand tree valued for its glossy green leaves and lemon-scented foliage. It can reach 10 metres tall and makes an excellent shelter tree or native hedge. In spring, it produces clusters of small, yellowish flowers that are attractive to insects. Tarata is hardy, tolerates wind and drought once established, and is an excellent choice for native plantings or revegetation projects.

Why Choose a Pittosporum Lemonwood Hedge?

The Pittosporum lemonwood hedge is prized for its rapid growth—often up to 1 metre per year—forming a dense, lush barrier ideal for privacy, shelter from wind, or as a living backdrop for your garden’s more colourful plantings. Its foliage remains lush all year, providing structure and vibrant colour even through winter. Lemonwood responds exceptionally well to regular trimming, allowing you to keep hedges as neat or naturally shaped as you like. This makes it a popular choice for boundary hedging, driveway screens, or dividing garden spaces with living green walls.

Planting and Care of Pittosporum Lemonwood Hedge

Plant your Pittosporum lemonwood hedge in full sun to part shade, in well-drained soil. Space plants about 1 metre apart for a dense hedge, or closer for a rapid screen. Lemonwood is wind and coastal tolerant, making it well-suited to exposed sites common in New Zealand gardens. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant and generally untroubled by pests or diseases. Mulching and an annual feed in spring will support lush growth. Trim your hedge once or twice a year for a tidy, formal appearance, or less frequently for a more natural look.

Companion Plants and Alternative Pittosporum Varieties

Lemonwood pairs beautifully with flowering backbone trees like Magnolia Amethyst Flame (Amethyst Flame Magnolia Tree), or for something striking in foliage, consider Meryta sinclairii 'Cream Edge'. If you prefer a more compact or contrasting pittosporum, you might also like Pittosporum tenuifolium for its elegant, slender habit, or the blue-toned Pittosporum 'Wrinkled Blue'. Gardeners after a truly low-growing option can opt for Pittosporum 'Midget' (Dwarf Pittosporum) or the refined Pittosporum 'Stephens Island' (Dwarf Karo). For a bold, contemporary twist, Pittosporum 'Limelight' (Kohuhu) stands out with its bright lime foliage.

Create Your Own Living Green Screen

A Pittosporum lemonwood hedge is a resilient, striking addition to any New Zealand garden, valued for its beauty, privacy, and shelter. Whether framing a driveway, lining a front fence, or dividing outdoor spaces, lemonwood’s lush foliage and sweet spring scent make it a joy to grow. Choose healthy plants, rich Kiwi-native heritage, and year-round performance—explore the possibilities for your garden with lemonwood and its companion trees such as Prunus Mountain Ice, Platanus Alford Flame, or for Japanese-inspired style, Acer palmatum 'Okagami'. Plant a Pittosporum lemonwood hedge and enjoy a garden boundary that’s as practical as it is beautiful.
