Features of Protea 'Pink Ice'

Protea 'Pink Ice' is renowned for its large, dusky pink cone-shaped flowers surrounded by silvery bracts, appearing from winter well into late spring. The grey-green leaves contrast beautifully with the blooms, adding visual interest year-round. Mature pink protea plants can reach 1.5 to 2 metres high and wide, making them excellent for garden beds, borders, or as dramatic cut flowers for the vase with impressive longevity.

Growing and Caring for Pink Protea Plants in New Zealand

The pink protea plant is remarkably easy to grow in well-drained soils with a sunny position. It prefers slightly acidic, sandy soil and will not tolerate waterlogging—a raised bed or sloped site is ideal. Minimal fertiliser is needed; avoid phosphorus-rich products. Mulch well to retain moisture but keep it away from the stem. Once established, Protea 'Pink Ice' is hardy to light frosts and requires very little water, making it perfect for coastal gardens and dry, sunny sites.

Annual pruning after flowering keeps the shape tidy and encourages vibrant new growth. Regularly remove spent blooms to enhance next season’s display.

Landscaping Ideas Using Pink Protea Plants

Add a pink protea plant to mixed shrub beds for structure and colour, or plant in groups for a stunning impact. For a themed garden bed, team Protea 'Pink Ice' with other striking proteas such as Protea cynaroides (King Protea), Protea Fiery Sunset, or the unique Protea Franciscan. Pair with silver-leaved natives or drought-tolerant companions like Grevillea Peaches and Cream (Grevillea Cream) and Protea Limelight for a palette of exotic texture and colour.

Protea 'Pink Ice' also combines beautifully with smaller shrubs such as Pittosporum Little Sprite (Dwarf Pittosporum), or for a real splash of colour, grow alongside Fuchsia 'Cotton Candy' and Chaenomeles cathayensis (Flowering Quince).

Other Protea Varieties and Special Selections

Looking for more inspiration? For a softer palette, try Protea White Ice or the vivid tones of Protea Fiery Sunset. Expand your collection with unusual varieties such as Protea Limelight or stunning statement shrubs like Protea cynaroides (King Protea).

For bright year-round foliage or hedging options, Berberis Aurea Nana makes a cheerful partner to a pink protea plant display.
